Strange Currency

Favorites from the past, present, and future. Nighttime becomes eclectic. Tom Petty once sang of the last DJ, the mythical creature who plays what they want to play. Since its start in 2009, Strange Currency has adhered to that idea: A show that was not influenced by trends but not ignorant of them either, aware of currents in popular music but not beholden to them. Why not throw in Yes next to or a few blocks away from Sturgill Simpson? Why not recognize the genius of both George Benson and St. Vincent? Why not dive into Brian Eno’s experimental work and place in next to the bold and brave sounds of Khruangbin? It’s a daunting task to keep track of it all and worry about genres or charts, so why not embrace them all? Strange Currency has been heard on KMUW’s FM stream since 2009. Retro Cocktail Hour

The music is served "shaken, not stirred" every week on The Retro Cocktail Hour.  Here you'll find vintage recordings from the dawn of the Hi-Fi Era - imaginative, light-hearted (and sometimes light headed) pop stylings designed to underscore everything from the backyard barbecue to the high-tech bachelor pad. Among the artists featured on The Retro Cocktail Hour are lounge legends like Frank Sinatra and Juan Esquivel; tiki gods Martin Denny and Les Baxter; swinging cocktail combos featuring The Three Suns and Jack "Mr. Bongo" Costanzo; and mambo king Perez Prado.  The series also spotlights up and coming lounge/exotica artists, including Waitiki, Ixtahuele, the Tikiyaki Orchestra, Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack, the Voodoo Organist and many more.
