Community Newsroom

MEDIALEX is building a Community Newsroom in partnership with Press Forward Bluegrass, CivicLex, the UK School of Journalism & Media, and others.

Part of the newsroom project includes a pilot Community Correspondent training program conducted in partnership with Report for America and Press Forward Bluegrass. This pilot program will train community members in journalistic ethics, fact verification, and core reporting techniques.  The first cohort of this program will become paid journalism staff embedded with MEDIALEX and other news organizations participating in the pilot.

Grassroots Journalism

Our grassroots public interest/public health journalism has been directed by our radio’s public health & safety license as well as by partnerships with various civic and nonprofit organizations.

MEDIALEX’s approach to community-powered journalism has been studied by University of Kentucky journalism faculty and presented at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) National Convention, recognizing the MEDIALEX’s model as an effective example of community-centered, collaborative local journalism.

As a result, MEDIALEX now enjoys a formal affiliation with the UK School of Journalism & Media, including a permanent seat on our board for a journalism faculty member.  That board member helps provide journalistic oversight while MEDIALEX staff manage daily editorial tasks and quality control across platforms.  Additionally, professional journalists host shows on MEDIALEX radio.
